If you’re healthy enough to obtain coverage on the individual market, need a short-term plan, or if you have a small business and qualify for small group, Health Plan One can help. Otherwise, there are offerings in Connecticut like Medicaid, HUSKY or the high risk pool. All of these government programs can help those who are medically uninsurable or who cannot afford private insurance to obtain basic health coverage. We, here at Health Plan One, can help you figure out which category you fall into and help find the plan that best fits your needs.

Sole proprietor plans will cover not only the small-business owner, but also his or her family. If you own a small business but are not a sole proprietor, you can apply for a small group plan. You must have been in business for at least 3 months, and you must have two or more eligible employees who each work at least 30 hours per week. Health Plan One can help you find a plan that works for your business, simply call our toll-free number at (877) 567-5267.

Medicaid is an option available to those who cannot afford or qualify for private health insurance. It works like regular health insurance. If you qualify, you’ll receive a card to show at doctor appointments, if your doctor participates in the program, the state will pay for the bill, after any other insurance you might have has paid. The program pays for many medical services including in- and outpatient hospital care, laboratory services, nursing home care, home health care, transportation necessary to receive medical care (ambulance rides), and other services. Medicaid can be used to pay for health care services if you are receiving AFDC or State Supplement benefits, disabled or legally blind, 65 years or older, under 21 years of age, or pregnant. There are income requirements to qualify for Medicaid, depending on family size, location, and other factors.

The HUSKY program is designed to provide health insurance to children. It was signed into law in 1997 by Governor John G. Rowland. This program provides coverage to children up to 19 years old, at all income levels and can also cover, depending on income, parents, relative caregivers, and pregnant women. The HUSKY plan includes services under the traditional Medicaid program (now known as HUSKY Part A) and further provides health services for children in higher-income families (called HUSKY Part B). For most families, HUSKY is low-cost or free.

You may also qualify for the Connecticut high risk pool, called Connecticut Health Reinsurance Association (HRA). Under HRA there are four plans: Individual, Conversion, Portability, and TAA.
