Pennsylvania offers many options for those looking for individual, family, group or small business health insurance. There are even options available in Pennsylvania for Medicaid, CHIP, adultBasic, or the high risk pool. All of these government programs can help those who are medically uninsurable or who cannot afford private insurance to obtain basic health coverage. We, here at Health Plan One, can help you figure out which category you fall into and help find the plan that best fits your needs.

Pennsylvania offers CHIP (Children’s Health Insurance Program) to cover children in Pennsylvania 19 or under whose family income is too high to qualify for Medicaid, but cannot afford private individual insurance. CHIP enrollment fees and co-payments are based on the family’s income. Though there is no income limit for CHIP (you can never make too much money to be in the program) the higher your income, the more you will be expected to contribute toward the program in premiums, though these premiums are still very low.  The benefits include regular checkups and office visits, dentist visits (cleanings and fillings), vaccines, mental health care, and eye exams (and glasses). For adults 19-64 the adultBasic program is offered. This program is intended to cover adults who do not qualify for any part of the Medicaid program and meet income and eligibility requirements. Benefits include hospitalization, physician services (primary care and specialists), emergency services, and maternity care. Pennsylvania also offers a High Risk Pool alternative. This is the result of a new law that makes it easier to gain coverage under certain situations, including if you left a job where you had group health insurance, or had another plan for more than 18 months without a break of more than 63 days. Specifically, if you meet certain criteria, you are considered an eligible individual and guaranteed the right to buy individual health coverage from Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans in Pennsylvania without a pre-existing condition exclusion period.
