THOUSAND OAKS, CA (April 2, 2007)– Blue Cross of California (Blue Cross) has a long history of giving back to the communities where its associates live and work. In 2006, the strong commitment continued through financial support and the generosity of the company’s associates.
Blue Cross’ community efforts for 2006 were highlighted by a $2.68 million contribution that supported 1526 community-based non-profit organizations throughout California. Through its annual Associate Giving Campaign, Blue Cross associates can direct their giving to any 501(c)(3) organization, and enjoy a 50 percent match by the company’s foundation.
“Social responsibility is a core value at Blue Cross of California,” said Brian A. Sassi, president and general manager of Blue Cross. “Our mission is to improve the lives of the people we serve and the health of our communities. We are very proud of the way Blue Cross associates came together through the Associate Giving Campaign with such compassion and generosity to help us fulfill that mission.”
Not only did Blue Cross support local charities through the Associate Giving Campaign, the company also supported other causes by raising additional funds and by associates donating their time and talents.
Other community highlights for 2006 include:
- Blue Cross was a Diamond Sponsor for the Inner City Games Los Angeles/Hollenbeck Youth Center’s sports, academic tutoring and gang prevention programs.
- Participation in the Los Angeles Food Bank December food drive, in which Blue Cross associates responded generously.
- A very successful American Red Cross Blood Drive in which Blue Cross associates donated 66 pints of blood, enough to help save almost 200 lives.
Blue Crew volunteers at Blue Cross’ Newbury Park location took part in numerous charitable events throughout the year including:
Volunteering time and donating items for the Back to School clothing drive for Children’s Auxiliary Services, which serves the needs of foster children that are not being met through other sources.
Serving Thanksgiving meals at the Oxnard Salvation Army.
Participating and donating for Salvation Army Toys for Joy and Angel Tree Foundation.
Donations to the Interface Children and Family Services “Adopt and Angel” Holiday program, providing gift cards to needy children and their families.
Sponsoring several events throughout the year for the Landon Pediatric Foundation.
Addressing the growing ranks of the uninsured will be a main focus for 2007.
