Chicago, III.— UniCare Life & Health Insurance Company and its affiliated companies (“UniCare”) announced today that its sister company Cost Care, Inc. has been awarded Health Utilization Management Accreditation from URAC, a Washington, D.C.-based health care accrediting organization that establishes quality standards for the health care industry.
Cost Care, Inc. conducts utilization management for UniCare, a family of health benefit companies serving approximately 1.3 million members in the United States. Utilization management refers to the routine administrative review by health insurers to determine whether the proposed medical care is eligible for benefits under the member’s insurance policy.
“This Health Utilization Management Accreditation is a respected mark of quality in the health benefits field that should give much confidence to our members,” said Robert Sorrenti, M.D. vice president and medical director for UniCare. “It means that our utilization management process is clinically sound to our members and provider partners.”
Cost Care, Inc. and UniCare are subsidiaries of WellPoint, Inc., the largest publicly traded commercial health benefits company in terms of membership in the United States. The Health Utilization Management Accreditation awarded to Cost Care, Inc. applies to medical, dental and behavioral health services offered to UniCare members.
