Recent Changes in Medigap Plans Could Reduce Seniors’ Monthly Bills
With New Medicare Supplement Plans Available, Seniors Should Check Their Health Insurance Options

SHELTON, CT, JUNE 2 2010:  As the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act (MIPPA) became reality, seniors should review their current coverage to make a more affordable choice.

The changes are extensive: Supplemental Plan M and Plan N are now available. Plans E, H, I and J are no longer available. The new law eliminates at-home recovery and preventive care benefits from all plans. A new hospice benefit is added to all plans and carriers will be required to offer Plans C and F.

Seniors may want to consider adding a Medigap plan to ensure they are covered by their health insurance plans.

Here are some frequently asked questions from seniors to our Medicare experts:

What are the differences in the new plans?

Plan M and Plan N were designed to offer lower monthly premiums by introducing office co-payments and other cost-sharing options. For example, Plan N has a $20 office co-pay and a $50 emergency room co-pay, while Plan M covers 50% of the Part A deductible.

What should I do if I currently have Plan E, H, I or J?

Nothing. Plans cannot be taken away from you without your knowledge. Medicare Part D now has prescription drug coverage, so these plans are no longer needed. Newly available options might be more affordable.

What is the difference between a Medicare Supplement and a Medicare Advantage Plan?
A Medicare supplement plan allows you to go to any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare. It works in addition to your main Medicare plan. A Medicare Advantage plan is run by a private insurance company and could limit available providers.  It typically combines the Parts A, B and D into one plan.
