In 1982, the Kansas City Blue Cross and Blue Shield Plans merged, creating Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City (BCBSKC). Since then, the company has grown to serve more than 880,000 members in the greater Kansas City metropolitan community.
BCBS invested in their infrastructure in order to better and more efficiently serve their members. In 1999, they completed the installation of the Facets computer system, their core system, which enables them to track effectively all components of their business. And in 2003, they purchased their headquarters building at 2301 Main Street. This purchase will save the company money now and in the future as it will help drive down administrative costs. It also gives the company an opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to the community – a statement in granite that they are here to stay!
In September 2003, BCBSKC celebrated its 65th anniversary. This milestone marked eight decades of providing quality healthcare coverage in this community. That year, they also hit another significant milestone in their history – they grew their revenues to more than $1 billion. In addition, in 2003 they saw the strongest overall membership growth in their 65-year history, giving them the largest market share in the Kansas City area – more than twice the size of their nearest competitor.
Today, BCBSKC serves more than 880,000 people in 30 counties in northwestern Missouri and Johnson and Wyandotte Counties in Kansas. Through at least one of their physician and hospital networks, group and individual customers can access virtually every physician and every hospital in their operating area.
