For 63 years, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Montana (BCBSMT) has been protecting their fellow Montanans from catastrophic and unexpected medical expenses, and for the past 16 years has been engaged in managed care plans with the Montana medical community, as well.
They are a Montana business, licensed and regulated as a not-for-profit health services corporation by the Montana Insurance Department.
- BCBSMT employs over 750 Montanans in Billings, Bozeman, Butte, Great Falls, Helena, Kalispell, and Missoula with an annual payroll of over $33 million.
- They offer a full range of quality health care coverage including:
- Traditional indemnity insurance
- Point-of-service and managed care benefit plans
- Supplemental benefits for Medicare beneficiaries
- Coverage for federal employees, retirees, and dependents through the Federal Employee Program (FEP)
- Coverage for uninsured children through the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP)
- Arrangements for active duty military, military dependents, and retirees through CHAMPUS/TriWest
- They serve more than 240,000 customers all across our state and more than 140,000 Medicare beneficiaries. Participating in their network are over 1,700 licensed Montana physicians, 58 hospitals and critical access facilities, more than 250 other facility providers, and 2,200 allied health care professionals. “No Balance Billing” is a key benefit for their customers because these participating providers accept the BCBSMT allowance as payment in full for covered services.
- BCBSMT administers both Medicare A (facility) and B (professional) on behalf of Montana’s senior citizens and has since the beginning of the Medicare program. Administering Medicare locally allows seniors and providers to work with Montanans rather than an out-of-state administrator.
Other Programs
- BCBSMT serves as the lead carrier for the Montana Comprehensive Health Association, Montana’s high-risk pool, serving 1,636 traditional members and 1,710 portability members as of December 30, 2004. The Premium Assistance Plan now has 248 members.
- The Caring Foundation of Montana, Inc., founded by BCBSMT in 1992, includes both the Caring Program for Children and the Care Screenings Program. The Caring Program provides primary and preventive health benefits for uninsured, lower income children, while Care Screenings makes available mammograms and prostate screenings for uninsured, lower income adults. BCBSMT provides all administrative support for the Foundation as part of our corporate contribution, so all other contributions go directly to medical care.
