Founded in 1939, Blue Shield of California is the state’s third largest health plan. Blue Shield is a not-for-profit corporation with approximately 4,500 employees and more than 20 offices throughout California serving approximately 3.2 million members. The National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) has awarded Blue Shield an “Excellent” rating for service and clinical quality. Blue Shield has also received an “A” (Excellent) rating from AM Best and an “A” rating from Standard and Poor’s.
