Preferred Provider Organizations (PPO) differ from Health
Maintenance Organizations (HMO) plans in that HMO plans require members to see
in-network care providers, such as primary care doctors, specialists and
hospitals. In consequence, Health
Maintenance Organizations are usually the cheaper plan between the two. Preferred Provider Organization plans provide
members the option of choosing out-of-network care providers at an additional
copay rate. CIGNA’s Open Access plans
allow members to choose their Primary Care Physician and while referrals are
necessary in a Health Maintenance Organization plan, referrals are not
necessary under Open Access plans when seeing an out-of-network specialist.
Health Savings Accounts are usually chosen by individuals
and families who want control over their health insurance dollars and want
responsibility over their health and who usually choose healthier
lifestyles. Health Savings Accounts are
flexible whether the member chooses to use the money for short-term copayments
or long-term medical expenses in the future.
HSAs also follow the individual if s/he switches jobs, careers or even
marital status.
